1. Draught-proofing – fill all incoming drafts with either newspaper, beading or sealant.2. Insulate your hot water tank with a jacket - they are very cheap and could save you up around £30 per year. 3. Double-glazing - though a large expense, 50% of your heat loss goes through the windows in your home. 4. Replace old boliers - replacing boilers more than 15 years old means that you will have a more efficient boiler. 5. Energy Saving Light Bulbs - Save £5-£10 per year with the cost recovered in 6 months. 6. Immersion timers - forget to switch off your immersion heater? put on a timer system giving you greater control. 7. Turn the room thermostat down by 1 degree centigrade. This can save around £30 a year. 8. Turn off all appliances on standby including TVs and microwaves. A DVD player still uses 85% of electricity when on standby. 9. To keep your fridge / freezer running energy-efficiently, defrost it regularly avoiding frost build-up. 10. Showering instead of bathing reduces the amount of energy used to heat the water. 11. Heat energy is lost up your chimney. If NOT in use, plug your chimney with newspaper to prevent heat escaping. 12. Curtains, clothes, furniture against radiators drastically reduces their ability to heat a room. 13. Unplug all equipment when finished with them - including phone chargers, as they will still draw electricity whilst plugged in. 14. Washing powders today are very effective, so you can afford to wash clothes at a lower, more energy-efficient temperature. 15. Microwave ovens can be a more efficient method of cooking or heating food. 16. Only use your washing machine when you have a full load of clothes to save electricity. 17. Most Condenser dryers consume a lot of energy when in use. If the weather is good, why not dry outside? 18. Loft Insulation - homes lose about 25% of their heat through the roof. Insulation is a cost-effective way of combatting this loss. 19. Lagging insulates pipes and decreases the amount of heat lost from water whilst it’s in the pipeline. It will also protect your pipes 20. Thermostatic radiator control valves - these cost about £6 each and sense the room temperature, adjusting the radiators' temp to suit. |
